Not only was he making a debut appearance at the Book Café in Harare, but it was also the first time that the 31-year-old was celebrating his birthday away from his home country.

The birthday coincided with his debut performance at the Book Café during the October International Jazz and World Music Festival.

The night kicked off with an up-close interview of the musician, courtesy of organisers of the festival. Bangani spoke of his personal life and career.

Surrounded by fans and fellow artists that had come to witness the opening night of the jazz festival, Bangani said he had no problem celebrating his birthday in such a way because Zimbabwe is like his home.

“Customarily, I am used to spending such special moments with my family and close friends, but for me Zimbabwe is home and I am excited to be doing this differently,” an elated Bangani said.

Fans broke into song and cheered, “Happy birthday Ntando!” as he prepared to cut the cake.

Everyone who was at the venue had a taste of the cake. This just created more hype to what was a stylish opening night for the jazz festival.

“These are the most exciting moments of my career that I will always remember. Playing at this festival is a good deal for me because the musician from whom I draw my inspiration is also from Zimbabwe.

“You wouldn’t believe it but it’s Oliver Mtukudzi. He is more than a superstar, but a father and ambassador. His wealth of experience and professionalism is something that we as artists need to emulate to be successful,” said Bangani.

Bangani was an early favourite on the stage, particularly with women who were dancing and singing along to the young musician’s soulful lyrics especially on his chart-topping song Dali Wami off his album titled Imvelaphi.

However, talented musician Alexio Kawara was not to be outclassed as he staged an outstanding show. He keeps on getting better by the day and this is proven by his regular performances on big festivals.

Speaking to StandardLife&Style on the sidelines of the concert Bangani said: “The crowd was really receptive, really good, so that made it easy. I am glad about the collaboration I had with Alexio. The guy is really good and he has already told me about his intention to come to SA.”
