Isaac Mupande pleaded guilty to a charge of growing marijuana when he appeared before Binga resident magistrate Stephen Ndlovu.

He was convicted and sentenced to six months in jail.

The court heard that on February 4 this year, two police officers were tipped that Mupande had plants of mbanje in his garden.

They visited his home and questioned him over the issue.

Mupande admitted growing the dagga claiming it was meant only for his smoking.

The police later asked him to lead them to the garden where they found 17 plants of the dagga with a height of between 20 centimetres and 1,2 metres, leading to his arrest.

The plants were uprooted and confiscated by the state for destruction.

When asked in court why he was growing marijuana, Mupande said it was for smoking. Bruce Maphosa prosecuted the case.
