Nigerian Professor Wole Soyinka says he is devastated by the death of his fellow countryman and literary icon, Chinua Achebe who died on Friday at the age of 82.

Soyinka made the comments on Cool FM, a private radio station in Lagos. According to BBC’s Fidelis Mbah, the Nobel Laureate said: “I’m just devastated. I don’t want to say anything yet. I’m just devastated” Simon Winder, publishing director at Penguin, called him an “utterly remarkable man”.

“Chinua Achebe is the greatest of African writers and we are all desolate to hear of his death,” he said.

Achebe, a talented and celebrated writer and author of the timeless novel, Things Fall Apart, passed on at a hospital in Boston, Massachusetts.
