FORMER Defence and Home Affairs minister, Enos Nkala has over the past fortnight been admitted at Mater Dei Hospital in Bulawayo with kidney and heart problems.

Nkala looked frail and his eyes were sunken when The Standard visited the hospital on Friday.
Mines and Mining Development minister, Obert Mpofu and Zanu PF Matabeleland North chairman, Richard Moyo also visited Nkala, who complained of pain all over his body.
“Thank you Obert [Mpofu] for visiting me, may God bless you for your kindness,” said Nkala. “We are old now, I am in my 80s and the body is complaining but I will be fine.”
Nkala said despite the illness that has seen him being bedridden for two weeks, he did not wish to seek medical attention in South Africa, but would receive treatment in Zimbabwe.
Mpofu then called President Robert Mugabe to tell him of Nkala’s illness before handing over the phone to the former minister.
Mugabe and his former top minister then spoke for about five minutes and the president could be heard saying he was praying for Nkala.

“I am happy to hear your voice sir, you know this body, I am feeling pain all over the body but I will pull through. I know that with your prayers, I will recover,” Nkala said to Mugabe.
Mpofu then assured Mugabe that he would keep checking on Nkala’s condition and update the Zanu PF leader.
Nkala is one of the founding members of Zanu PF, with the party having been formed at his Highfield house in Harare in 1963.
Despite fading from public limelight, he has remained a divisive figure and is often accused of instigating Gukurahundi, a military campaign that saw the killing of an estimated 20 000 civilians in Matabeleland and Midlands provinces in the 1980s.
