He was also banned for one year from driving any vehicle in the country.

Cholwe Blessed Mudenda (23), of Matabeleland North province pleaded guilty to culpable homicide and driving a public vehicle without a valid licence when he appeared before Lupane magistrate, Ailine Madzora.

He was convicted of both counts.

The prosecutor, Sanders Sibanda told the court that on October 1 last year, Mudenda was driving a Toyota Hiace along the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road at a high speed.

It was the State’s case that he had been hired to transport church members from Harare via Bulawayo to Binga.

He was carrying 18 passengers in the vehicle which is only authorised to carry 15 people.

While at the 44km peg, Mudenda hit an Impala before the vehicle overturned and landed on its wheels leading to the death one passenger, Joseph Mupande.

Seventeen other passengers were injured.

The magistrate said cases of road carnage were rampant, hence those who commit such crimes must be sent to jail to deter other would-be offenders.
