A hospital report shown to The Standard last week noted that one of the nurses who was on duty on the day Melody Masuwa disappeared allegedly knocked-off early, ironically the same time the patient disappeared.

Masuwa, who was admitted at the provincial health centre in May after complaining of chest and side pains, disappeared two days after her admission.

Chinhoyi Hospital superintendent, Collet Mawire confirmed that a preliminary report showed that there was no proper hand-over and take-over between the nurses the day Masuwa disappeared.

He was however quick to caution that the hand-over and take-over issue was not proof that nurses were responsible for her disappearance.

Mawire said further investigations would be carried out to establish where the nurse who was supposed to be on duty was when the other nurse took over.

He said the issue was made complicated by the police who delayed sending a decapitated human head found at the hospital’s dumpsite recently to a pathologist for identification purposes.

Mawire said it was also strange that they refused to let Masuwa breastfeed her child while in hospital as it was against the hospital policy.

Masuwa’s relatives suspect foul play.

The suspicion of foul play was fuelled two weeks ago when the decapitated human head was found at the hospital’s dumpsite.

The head was decomposed to the extent that it could not be established whether it was from the body of a man or woman.

Mashonaland West police spokesperson, Inspector Clemence Mabgweazara said police had sent the remains of the head found having been eaten by a dog, to a pathologist to establish the sex of the deceased.

Masuwa’s relatives believe the head belonged to their daughter and suspect she was killed for ritual purposes by one of their relatives with the help of some hospital workers.

It seems it never rains but pours for the Masuwa family, as Masuwa’s father, Final, was arrested recently for allegedly raping one of his granddaughters late last year.

He is on a US$100 bail.
