BULAWAYO — President Robert Mugabe yesterday mocked rival Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, labelling him a cry baby and accused him of usurping the responsibility of Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) by threatening to announce elections results.

Addressing his campaign rally at White City Stadium, Mugabe said Tsvangirai planned to discredit the electoral process.

On Friday Tsvangirai lashed out at African Union (AU) Commission chairperson, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma for claiming that he had not raised any complaints over the alleged vote rigging by Zanu PF.

Zuma had said all the candidates she had met since arriving in Harare on Wednesday never mentioned any attempts by Zanu PF to steal the election.

Mugabe said Tsvangirai was opposed to elections.

“Listen to what the MDC-T leader says, he is opposed to everything, he is crying every day. Just now, Madam Zuma came from the AU, she is the chairperson of the commission, she listened to what other observers were saying and made a statement to say things are going on well,” said Mugabe.

“No, things are not going well says Tsvangirai, crying all the time. He did not want elections. Parliament expired on June 29 but he says no no no, let us continue, there are other outstanding issues so we cannot have an election. We can’t have an election, yet the constitution says we must have elections every five years. What sort of a leader are you?”

Mugabe said Tsvangirai does not obey the rules of the country. “He said I am the one who will announce the election results. Have you ever heard any leader saying that? You will announce the election results as who?

“The law says election results will be announced by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission. We as Zanu PF obey that. We must obey the law,” said Mugabe.

Mugabe said he was aware that one group within MDC-T had been assigned to work on tactics of undermining the election, create violence or raise objections and cry afterwards saying the process was not free and fair.

Mugabe refuted allegations that the electoral process hadbeen militarised.

Mugabe pledged to urgently look into the water crisis in Bulawayo saying the Mtshabezi pipe line would be “officially commissioned soon”.

However, the Mtshabezi pipe line was commissioned by Water Resources Development and Management minister Samuel Sipepa Nkomo last week. Mugabe also lashed out at insensitive local authorities who are auctioning off houses for residents who owe money.

“What cruelty is that, we can’t have it? People owe yes, but give them a chance to pay. MDC-T says they don’t care, in fact that’s what they want,” said Mugabe.

Mugabe admitted that some people were starving and food relief was not reaching the rural areas.
