Clean-up the mess, restore sanity at PSMAS

It’s really a sad reading that the Premier Service Medical Aid Society (PSMAS) chief executive officer, Cuthbert Dube earns a monthly salary of US$250 000, while his managing director, Farai Muchena gets US$190 000, when the vast array of its membership are denied access to medical services.

Sunday View with Suitable Kajau

The medical society has been black-listed by medical service providers for its reluctance to pay for services rendered to its members.

Inversely, patients with PSMAS membership are required to pay cash up-front to get treated. Normatively they ultimately make claims from the society later.

This arrangement defeats the prudent need for anyone to subscribe for medical aid when it cannot work for them, but to create an earthly paradise for selfish executives who are given the mandate to run the affairs of the memberships. Such magnitude of abuse should end now, and restore sanity at all costs!

As if it’s not enough, if one pays up-front cash to medical service providers for consultation, they also pay large sums of funds buying drugs at pharmacies.

The impact of this is to deny life to low-level employees who cannot afford to spare extra cash for their health. I wonder why the Minister of Health has been watching helplessly all along without taking corrective action to curtail this rot at PSMAS.

Sadly, most of the membership is composed of civil servants whose salaries are below the poverty datum line. They are robbed of the little which they possess, and are therefore, exposed to possible loss of lives when they fall ill as the medical society does not meet its obligation to cater for their needs.

Thanks to investigative journalists for unmasking this scam. The government is, therefore, challenged to take a leading role in ensuring that interests of the PSMAS subscribers are protected from further abuse by these executives. I would like to believe that what is splashed for us in the press is a tip of the iceberg. There is a need for a universal audit of all transactions which are done by this organisation to ascertain its impartiality in executing its public mandate.

Corrupt elements should be flashed out immediately to pave way for sanity to prevail so as to serve Zimbabweans from unwarranted deaths which are preventable through adequate medical attention.

Health and Child Care minister David Parirenyatwa is urged to clear the mess by tracking the course of foot-prints of Media, Information and Broadcasting Services minister Jonathan Moyo who dissolved the ill-performing ZBC board in which Dube was also part of, and the subsequent suspension chief executive officer Happison Muchechetere, pending a forensic audit.

Does it mean that this Dube is an all weather ill-performer? Why is he at the helm of endangering human lives like that? He is busy seeking popularity in soccer circles when he can’t cater for the needs of the people who provide his hefty salary and perks which he donates in-part to soccer.

Right now there are thousands of PSMAS members who are stranded as they cannot raise enough cash for them to secure health services. Even if one claims his/her cash from PSMAS, they rarely give a 100% refund. Dube is exercising double standards with human life.

Members are robbed of their hard earned money by devious means as long as this status quo continues to flourish.

Like every other contributing member of PSMAS, we are anxiously awaiting with curiosity to see the mopping-up of this entity to realign it to satisfy its prime and basic goals of serving human life, through provision of medical aid to its membership.

i think this rot cascades to all govt entities and local authorities, whereby executives are earning obscene salaries whilst low level workers are going for months without pay.

That’s why I refused to have anything to do with this PSMAS. I could not be part and parcel of this scale of corruption! Their days are numbered!

  2. Gutter Poet December 15, 2013 at 1:31 pm #

If this were really true..then the gentleman who heads the PSMAS should do the honorable thing and shoot himself. Frankly how can he look at himself in the mirror and still go out and meet with the people that he has robbed so ruthlessly without dissolving into a sea of tear filled shame?

Its a shame to you Dube. I am one of your service provider; you fail to pay my claims timeously yet you are busy looting contributors money. The painful reality is that the patients are the ones on the receiving end.

I have checked the list of PSMAS board, the board members have been there for the past 17-18 years!!!! They have been alternating among themselves the chairmanship of the board for the past 18 years. Non of them has a medical qualification, no wonder they are not bothered by the welfare of patients but rather lining their pockets with board fees.

They also ensure the CEO is well paid so that he puts in good word for them to the ministers. I wonder why the previous Minister Henry Madzorera never tempered with the board or queried renumerations. Its common cause that Minister Parirenyatwa will not take any action, but will rather just late the issue blow over.

Why does a company need a CEO and an MD? What roles do these individuals play? When the pairs comes in for a total of US$440,000.00 a month; totaling US$5,280,000.00 in direct salaries per year!!! If we ad other perks they enjoy l am sure the amount exceeds US$7 million for the two gentlemen. To add salt to injury the medical aid society is not performing! No wonder the guy always lends money to Zifa yet he is not known to run any known successful businesses. The rot has to come to an end at some point Cde Mugabe.

My common sense tells me that these salary figures quoted are very wrong, too inflated….how about acurate journalism?

    • Antonio December 18, 2013 at 3:31 pm #

      True that

    • Yve December 19, 2013 at 11:12 am #

Luvjones common sense in not common always. Just the other week we were told that the CEO Of ZBC was earning well into 30K and this is an entity that does not have an inflow of funds regularly. On average a PSMAS member pays $40 / mnth. How many civil servants do you think are in Zim?? Do the math and you will see that this is not an exaggerated story.

I agree with u Luvjones…amongst all these pple who r commenting and using hate speech…Did u even think of meeting the PSMAS CEO n having a face to face chat with him…mind u the media these days exxagerates information and a lot of figures all in the name of tarnishing other pple’s images and good names.

  9. Agnesss Chikozho December 18, 2013 at 4:00 pm #

what happened to accurate journalism with verified facts….this information is not even balanced..its one sided…we want to names and sources of members complaining…we want to hear the CEO’s voice in this story.

Agness if Cuthbert Dube is your uncle its unfortunate he is a thief! Now that all has been said about him, he has to respond refuting and giving the correct information! How come he is silent up to now?Alternatively if its false he has the liberty to press defamatory charges against the press. How about if he refused to answer questions put to him by the reporters. Journalists can’t stop writing stories simply because someone arrogant is not willing to speak his side of the story! He should come public now or relinquish power to pave way for people with sound business management.

This is a tip of the ice berg, this man and his management is very corrupting, they award themselves with heft salaries and other perks. He has a lot of people benefiting from his medical aid yet they don’t contribute any cent to the society. Investigation will unearth more things concerning PSMAS management

  11. Option Gangare December 18, 2013 at 4:02 pm #

We are still awaiting anxiously to hear from authorities how they are going to resolve this matter at stake!Surely this absurdity should not be left to go unchallenged!unless if those with the powers are part of the game in swindling public of their social welfare! He should answer for his actions giving justifications why we cannot receive the best deal out of our membership!Shit yemunhu inoda kuti tife nekurwara isu tine medical aid subscription which are up to date!

  12. Manhanga Kutapira December 18, 2013 at 5:27 pm #

What causes people to continue paying money to an institution that has been discredited? Isnt membership optional? Is there no option to stop the membership and look for other well managed medical aid societies?

  13. Sir Foster December 18, 2013 at 6:06 pm #

But Mugabe & his ZANU PF are busy preaching that Zim’s austerity is coz of President Tswangson & his MDC-T whilst ppl are over paying themselves.

Do you see the link here This Dube character was also a Board member at ZBC. If you track where the money is going it is definitely being shared with others. This is a well coordinated structure and system of corruption. Its sickening to the marrow.

  16. Peter December 19, 2013 at 5:39 am #

He is well paid believe you me but the journalist has over exaggerated the figure.

  17. Munhu December 19, 2013 at 6:56 am #

Exaggeration, Exaggeration. Even the Standard itself could not publish the name of the stupid journalist.

  18. Whistle Blower December 19, 2013 at 11:26 am #

I always wondered when all this will be brought to a common platform where people with info about how these thieves are causing untold problems to the suffering people of Zimbabwe.

Cuthbert Dube, Ernest Gwinyai, Enock Chitekedza and Richard Mutasa must be investigated for stealing millions from PSMAS. Cuthbert used PSMAS funds to buy the Mbizi Property in Mt Pleasant somewhere. Ernest built a huge mansion last year using PSMAS funds. If you want information, then Isaiah Dube, Cuthbert’s right hand buyer is your man.

I have documentary proof to all this. Advocate Mtombeni protects them. They alternate the chairmanship of PSMAS to protect a criminal network of siphoning of funds.

  19. Robert December 19, 2013 at 2:15 pm #

Only joking, he only earns half that figure!

  20. Nitram2 December 19, 2013 at 10:25 pm #

That’s why I could not be part and parcel of this level of financial excesses!

  21. Journo December 21, 2013 at 12:34 pm #

Can’t All those foolish doubting Thomases see that this is an opinion article. You are so comfortable with people being quiet when corruption is being carried out but make noise when the truth is exposed. It is men like you, who hinder progress in this country. Perhaps you are looting in parastatals too. Its sickening but the truth shall be come out. Ichoo!

  22. saundy December 22, 2013 at 11:02 am #

If this the case what the heck are PSMAS members waiting for? Do something about this theft – be sure the authorities wont!!!
