MDC-T youths assault Mangoma

MDC-T deputy treasury-general, Elton Mangoma and secretary-general, Tendai Biti were assaulted yesterday by a group of party youths for allegedly calling for leadership renewal in the party.

BY PATRICE MAKOVA

Biti, Mangoma, youth assembly secretary-general, Promise Mkwananzi and others were attacked when they stepped outside Harvest House soon after party leader, Morgan Tsvangirai had finished holding a one-day meeting with the 210 MDC-T district chairpersons.

Top party executives also attended the meeting.

Mangoma, whose shirt was torn in the melee, was pummelled by a group of over 20 youths. He said he feared he had suffered a broken nose and his glasses were broken.

Biti and Mkwananzi were a bit lucky as they only received a few punches and kicks.

Mangoma said when he was leaving Harvest House, the youths started beating him up for no apparent reason.
“They just shouted that I needed to be beaten up, for what reason, I do not know,” he said. “This is the violence that we have always said we do not tolerate.”

Mangoma said the violence showed that the meeting was just called to “whip up emotions”.

The MDC-T deputy treasurer-general said he was still to decide what action to take, including reporting the matter to the police or instituting internal disciplinary measurers against the culprits.
Biti also confirmed that he was assaulted while leaving Harvest House.
“It was a drunken mob,” he said.

Biti said the meeting with the district chairpersons was “decent” but was later tainted by the violence which broke out outside Harvest House.

“We need to draw a line and take a firm stance, that violence is a non-starter and a no go area,” he said. “We did not create MDC-T so that it can be turned into another Zanu PF.”

Police had to be called to rescue several other officials who were holed up inside Harvest House. These included youth assembly chairperson, Solomon Madzore and his elder brother and Member of Parliament for Glen View, Paul Madzore, Manicaland provincial chairperson, Julius Magarangoma and MPs Prosper Mutseyami and Willas Madzimure.

Tensions had been high through-out the day as scores of drunken youths were baying for Mangoma’s blood, accusing him of trying to oust Tsvangirai from the MDC-T leadership. Biti and Mangoma’s personal drivers were seen parking their vehicles far away from Harvest House, with party officials saying they were afraid of being caught in the crossfire.

The youths were terrorising anyone believed to be sympathetic to Mangoma and Biti. While Tsvangirai was still meeting the 210 district chairpersons, The Standard witnessed at least four youths being assaulted outside Harvest House after they were accused of belonging to the “Mangoma faction.”

Throughout the day no police officers were visible while the youths were fighting each other right in the city centre and just metres away from a police post.

Earlier on at a press conference, party spokesperson, Douglas Mwonzora said the meeting had gone on well with district chairpersons rejecting calls for Tsvangirai to quit the party to pave way for the election of a new leadership.

He said the districts allegedly endorsed Tsvangirai as the MDC-T leader and party candidate for 2018.

Mwonzora said the meeting took note of the fact that Zanu PF and state security agents were taking advantage of the internal democracy in the MDC-T to sow seeds of division within the opposition party.

“To that end, the leadership of the MDC shall as has always been the case, be determined by congress, whether this congress is held in 2016 or earlier if the national council so desires,” he said.

Mwonzora claimed that Zanu PF had infiltrated MDC-T structures and was the one engineering calls for Tsvangirai’s ouster and leadership renewal in the party.

He claimed there were already two line ups of MDC-T officials which were being pushed by Zanu PF for the next opposition party congress.
Zanu PF spokesperson, Rugare Gumbo said his party had its own challenges and had no time and interest to meddle in
MDC-T affairs.

“Can they prove it?” he asked. “If they are failing to find a good leader with capacity, they must not blame others.”

Tsvangirai and his thugs have now exposed themselves as undemocratic buffoons. What difference then is there between Mugabe and Tsvangirai. They are birds of the same species. By beating up Mangoma and Biti they thought they would silence the two guys. Instead they have improved the image of the two as victims of a power-hungry and visionless leader by the name of Morgan Tsvangirai. Mangoma, Bennett, Biti and others should not worry about publicity as Morgan will always do them a favour through his stupidity!

Zanu PF always blame sanctions for its failures and MDC-T always blame Zanu PF for its own failures. indeed these are two sides of the same coin.

Violence ,thuggery, alcohol are the tools of the weak.

Every member of our society has a duty toward the other to behave in a civilised God fearing manner.

    We are not thugs.

Mwonzora needs to be careful what he says as spokesman for the party..What is the meaning of ‘ the districts endorsed Tsvangirayi as leader and candidate for 2018?’ I thought the whole fight is about bringing the 2016 Congress forward..Is Mwonzora saying the 2016 Congress has been cancelled by this meeting of yesterday? Might this spokesman task getting to be a tad too big for him much as being organising secretary is being too big for Chamisa..and err..mmm that of chairpersons too big for both Theresa Makone and Mao Moyo? By the way the press is quite agreeable to you saying you do not have a comment if you do not have a coherent one and then when ready you call for a press conference..This shooting from the hip is digging a pit for yourself good Sir..and you are slowly turning yourself into Saddam’s comical Ali..frankly you have not done so badly in the past but you seem to be slipping very fast of late..Come on Doug, take your sweet time. Remember, there is no hurry in Africa, in Zimbabwe even less hurry!

How can this idiot, Mwonzora, claim that “Zanu PF had infiltrated MDC-T structures and was the one engineering calls for Tsvangirai’s ouster and leadership renewal in the party“ when the whole world knows there’s an almighty leadership struggle in this party? This has nothing to do with ZanuPF.
This is exactly what we witnessed in 1963 when some broke away from Zapu to form Zanu. Zimbabwean politics has always been about mindless leadership struggles and nothing to do with working for the people. MDC-T is a waste of political space. A party going nowhere with a clueless leader and totally blind followers. Mangoma, being beaten up by thugs is an occupational hazard of being a politician in the Third World primitive politics. Fighting for deckchairs on a sinking ship. This would be hilarious if it was not tragic.

During the struggle fools call for the change of the commander instead of crafting strategies to fight the enemy.

The Tsvangirai must go agenda is a wrong agenda it deflects attention from more pertinent issues of restrategising and reenergising the party for the forth coming 2018 elxns. Those calling for Morgan’s exit should retrospect by asking themselves the following qstns: 1)has Morgan lost the past elxns freely and fairly 2) will a new leader be able to drum up support that unifies the party nationally 3)is there anyone who has been in the trenches long enough and has the requisite experience and calibre to takeover so be4 u get louder think harder on these points.

Tsvangirai understand that even if an election is called for today you still cannot beat Zanu pf, and you will even be beaten by a much larger margin. Can you not see the effects of fear instilled in the minds of the people by Zanu pf particularly in June 2008 when you chose to abandon the people and hide in Botswana, which is a time when the people needed you the most? You left your supporters leaderless and they were butchered by Zanu pf goons. You awfully showed that you are a fearful and non-resolute leader meaning when the going gets really tough you can’t be trusted to lead the struggle. Wakadududza, the same way you did when zanu pf won the 31 july election, ende tinonzwa kuti even during the liberation struggle you did the same. Of course kutya kunowanikwa muvanhu ndokusaka tirikuti apa pakuda those who can withstand the 250 degree heat of Zanu pf machinations. if you didn’t know, Zanu pf intelligence is now fully aware that to undo MDC-T they simply drive you to that hottest point of political power contestation knowing fully well that when you get to that point you breakdown and retreat. MDC-T was annihilated by Zanu pf way back in june 2008, and for as long as you don’t realise the need for you to step aside and let a new leader with a new thinking take over, MDC-T is doomed to opposition politics forever. Don’t be fooled by those rogue supporters of yours whose “loyalty” to your leadership is simply for personal gain. Wake up from your deep slumber Mr Tsvangirai and let a new leader take over for posterity’s sake. After all as founder you will remain a key figure in the party providing inspiration needed to move it foward. Look beyond your person Mr. Morgan

If Mangoma, Biti and Bennet decide to form their own Part the decision will be ill advised as they may be labled as MDC-T traitors (especially Biti and Mangoma) who would be believed to have been not representing the Party in good faith when they participated in building up of the Constitution with ZANU PF. consequently they may not win the heart of many, late alone ZANU PF

mugabe and tsvangirayi are dfferent sides of tha same coin.
dictators, selfishly ambitious, desiring power at any cost and sucking the lifeblood out of the citizen without much care, corrupt of minds, immoral, easily led and conned as happened when mugabe lied, misled and pretended tsvangi was important, while blocking sensible ideas from the mdc slyly and planning for the just ended election dishonestly.
tsvangi was too busy spending government money and exercising the little powers allowed him to womanise, jetset etc., sleeping on the job, while zanupf planned.
now he refuses to stand down, employing his pea brained hangers on to surprise, surprise intimidate and beat up on anyone teling him the abject and lafable status and state of the mdc party.

dont forget the senate induced split of 2005, democracy entails saying your mind out without fear or favour, while znpf says there isnt anyone better than mugabe, we thot the mdc offerered an alternative view but alas the difference is only in the names……where are you dark horses
