THE MDC-T leadership has hit the road running in preparation for a congress in October that is meant to re-energise party structures as the opposition party desperately tries to remain relevant on the country’s political arena.

Party leader, Morgan Tsvangirai, acting secretary general Tapiwa Mashakada, acting treasurer Theresa Makone and organising secretary Nelson Chamisa are on a whirlwind tour of provinces to spell out the “do’s and don’ts” as preparations for the congress gather momentum.
The MDC-T leadership was in Mutare yesterday to meet party structures from across the province. The meeting took place at Mutare Hall.
Judging by the attendance and the number of district and provincial representatives at the meeting, the former premier still has the grip on the province despite recent defections to the MDC Renewal Tem led by axed secretary-general, Tendai Biti.
During the closed door meeting, Chamisa gave all the structures, from the cell to the province deadlines to meet and come up with their structures before the congress.
“The meeting is about the congress preparations. We are ready for our congress in October,” he said.
“We are moving around all the provinces outlining the congress roadmap [and] what we are expecting from the leaders, the do’s and don’ts in terms of the campaigns, the unity of purpose and the cohesion of the party, the dynamics that we are expecting as we institutionalise the revival of structures.”

Commenting on the post congress era which has caused problems in the party in the past, Chamisa said a template had already been formulated to deal with the issues.
“We have a template that we have come up with that will deal with the post congress issues,” he said.
“As you know, internal democracy requires a post management process and that is now in place and that is what was being emphasised by the president in the meeting.”
