An eyewitness said the driver of the haulage truck, who survived the accident, claimed the driver of the Toyota Granvia encroached into his lane, resulting in the passenger vehicle being hit on its right side, killing all on board.

The accident happened a few kilometres from the city of Gweru at Tree Top near the toll gate.

The mangled wreckage of the Granvia was trapped under the haulage truck.

Most of the bodies were retrieved from the wreckage on Friday night except the decapitated head of a child which remained trapped inside the wreckage.

However, sources said the badly damaged child’s head was recovered yesterday morning by police officers who had gone to the scene of the accident.

Police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba could not immediately comment as she was not answering her mobile phone despite her earlier indication that she would provide full details of the accident.
