Registrar-General Tobaiwa Mudede has been quoted recently calling on people to stop using condoms, among other family planning methods. Mudede argued among other reasons that contraceptives were conduits for diseases such as cancer, especially in women.

The RG also claimed that contraceptives were a ploy by powerful nations to retard population growth in Africa as a way of weakening the continent.

However, in an interview, Parirenyatwa said although he had not seen Mudede’s report, he urged people to use contraceptives by all means.

“What I would like to emphasise is that the use of condoms is one of our very critical prevention methods that has helped us in the reduction of STIs and HIV and unwanted pregnancies in Zimbabwe,” said Parirenyatwa.

Against this background, Parirenyatwa said they would always advocate for contraceptive use.

“So as the government, we advocate very strongly for the use of condoms,” said the minister.

A social worker with a non-governmental organisation, Sarah Mpofu, echoed the same sentiments, saying condoms were necessary in the fight against HIV and Aids.

“We have a lot of people who are dying of Aids every day and we also have a lot of children who have been orphaned by Aids and many of these orphans are struggling to make ends meet, so we would like people to use condoms and curb the spread of STIs which are causing many challenges,” said Mpofu.

“Zimbabwe is striving to have a HIV and Aids free generation and the other way to achieve it is through use of contraceptive methods,” said Mpofu.
