Police confirmed several reports had been made of theft at funerals where unsuspecting mourners had their vehicles broken into and valuables stolen.

Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi said police had received reports from mostly the Northern suburbs where mourners had been robbed. “The ZRP calls upon people with information to assist police,” Nyathi said.

He said that police would ensure officers are deployed at funerals. One of the victims of theft at a funeral said she was surprised to find the windows of her vehicle damaged and goods she had left inside missing.

“It was surprising because I did not even think that could happen at a funeral. The thief took advantage of mourners when we went inside. It is bad and we hope the police will act to bring the culprits to book,” she said while requesting anonymity.

Nyathi said ZRP was investigating the cases and urged mourners to be on high alert. He said the thieves targeted phones, bags and wallets among other things they found in vehicles.
