Defender Aaron Katebe was the star in FC Platinum’s narrow 1-0 win over Young Africans of Tanzania in the return leg of the CAF Confederations Cup at Mandava yesterday.

The miners bowed out of the competition with a 5-2 aggregate loss.

Walter Musona’s first half volley was enough to give the Zimbabwean side victory at home but not enough to ensure progression.

The task was always going to be herculean for the miners considering the 5-1 hammering in the reverse fixture. Losing coach Norman Mapeza was gracious in defeat pouring praise on his charges’ run in the campaign. “It was going to be difficult considering the first leg result, but we could have scored more today. “I am happy with the way we played in the continent, we have a young team and the boys did very well,” said Mapeza.

Young Africans dutch-born coach Hans Pluijm praised his opponents despite his convincing victory.

“They are a good side and they have quality especially going forward. It was a difficult game and we knew that when we were preparing for this match. Today we did not take our chances and we were punished,” said Pluijm.

The host started the match like a house on fire threatening to tear apart their opponents only to have a Donald Ngoma goal disallowed for offside as early as the fifth minute.

Mandava was brought alight in the 29th minute when Musona volleyed the Zimbabwean side into the lead but unfortunately, his strike turned out to be the only goal of the match.
