According to minutes of Mashonaland West Provincial Lands Committee dated March 10 2015, ZRP submitted an application for land near Nyabira Service Centre to “create a dormitory town for the force”.

Another application was also received from the police for a solar power generating project at the same farm.

“Both these two projects can be accommodated at the targeted farm, leaving the initial beneficiary with enough agricultural land for his needs. The beneficiary is in agreement with the proposed re-planning of the farm,” the minutes read.

The committee also promised to give the army’s Mechanised Brigade based at Inkomo barracks a farm.

The committee heard that the Mechanised Brigade needed a farm for its agricultural activities. The brigade currently has a large herd of cattle being kept at Inkomo Barracks reserve due to lack of land.

Mashonaland West police spokesperson Inspector Clemence Mabgweazara however said he was not aware of the dormitory town issue. Government plans to build a multi-billion dollar new capital city in Mt Hampden, close to Nyabira, but has not disclosed the source of funding for the project.

The new capital in President Robert Mugabe’s Zvimba district would also host a new Parliament and other key government buildings.
