MDC-T party secretary in the president’s office, Sessel Zvidzai on Saturday confirmed the development, saying riot police armed with baton sticks, water cannons and dogs besieged the prayer venue after they got wind that the opposition planned to hold a prayer meeting.
“We could not do anything as the police at the last minute banned the prayer meeting,” Zvidzai said.
MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai was expected to join other political leaders and civil groups at the prayer meeting.
National police spokesperson Charity Charamba on Saturday said she was unaware of the said prayer meeting.
