Mnangagwa was speaking at Nyikavanhu Clinic, some 40km outside Mvuma, where she had been leading development initiatives at 10 clinics in her constituency.

“We are worried about the health of our people and it is important for government to invest more into primary health care,” she said.

“But we should also not take a back seat. This is why as your MP, I have taken a lead role in the development of this clinic with your help.”

Mnangagwa said if lives were to be saved, primary healthcare providers had to be equipped to ensure basic service is given before referral.

Nyikavanhu Clinic, which serves a 20km radius and a population of 5 000, was recently electrified. The MP donated an outdoor solar-powered fridge to store drugs.

The clinic, which also has a maternity wing, faces acute water shortages and like most health centres in the country, is affected by drug and equipment shortages.

Sister-in-charge Loveness Chihwiza said while challenges continued to persist, her team took heart in that Mnangagwa was concerned.
