Susan Dangarembga died in Harare last Tuesday aged 91 and was buried in Harare’s Warren Hills cemetery.

“She died on Tuesday, well she was old and perhaps that is the reason,” Tsitsi said.

“She also had a diabetes condition so you know the condition can be complicated.”

Susan was Zimbabwe’s first female Public Service commissioner and in a eulogy, Mutambara said Susan’s visionary leadership and transformative role shaped thousands of students, many of who now held prominent positions in politics, government, industry and commerce.

Mutambara said the former Hartzell High School teacher broke gender barriers even when she was still a student during the colonial period. “Academic excellence was her forte. Starting from primary school, where she was still known as Susan Ngonyama, she skipped a standard, what we now call grades,” he said.
