The water project, which is part of the ongoing Finnish Red Cross-funded building community resilience through integrated health and disaster risk reduction in Muzarabani project has helped ease challenges, particularly at the school and clinic where water were becoming unbearable.

Sister Muguti, the nurse-in-charge at Chiwenga Clinic said the water project was a timely intervention and they were grateful to Red Cross and members of the community who helped make the project a reality.

“We were having serious water challenges at the clinic with patients who spent much of their time here struggling even for water to drink. Even some of the procedures we undertake for mothers giving birth and various other ailments require a reliable supply of water and we are happy that the Red Cross has come to our rescue,” she said.

The project brought together members of the community and the Red Cross in ensuring that there is safe water for healthier communities in Chiwenga.

Members of the community weighed in with labour for trenching of the water pipes while Red Cross provided the solar system to pump water as well as storage tanks.

ZRCS secretary-general Maxwell Phiri said Muzarabani district was one of their key project areas in view of the many challenges it continues to face. He said the water project was strategic in ensuring safer and resilient communities.

“ZRCS has been operating in Muzarabani for a long time and we are happy with the positive change we are bringing in a largely disadvantaged community battling with challenges like flooding and food insecurity. Given that the area is generally dry, we are happy that this water project supported by Finnish Red Cross will help ease water challenges,” he said.

ZRCS is also working with communities to upgrade deep wells dug into properly secured boreholes that can help ensure that safe water is available to improve health and hygiene.

Water shortages have over the years caused outbreaks of water-borne diseases and the ZRCS believes the water project coupled with training on health and hygiene in the community, will help foster improved hygiene and ensure safer communities.
