More than 500 Chikurubi Farm prisoners had a memorable day when the United Family International Church (Ufic) leader Prophet Emmanuel Makandiwa celebrated his birthday by throwing a party for the inmates.

Makandiwa’s birthday falls on December 25 and yesterday’s party came after another one hosted by Prophetess Ruth Makandiwa at Chikurubi Female Prison.
The inmates were given an opportunity to sit on well-decorated chairs and tables with expensive flowers on them, drank mineral water and ate delicious food with soft drinks to complete the meal.
Speaking to the inmates on behalf of Makandiwa, church spokesman Pastor Prime Kufa said it was a time for reflections and to find good purpose.
“The prophet is sending his love to you, he is praying for you and he says God bless you,” he said.
“Every year the prophet on his birthday chooses those who are less fortunate to celebrate his birthday with, and this year he chose Chikurubi Farm inmates.”
The inmates, who also had the opportunity to sing, dance, recite poems on the day, could not hide their excitement.

According to one inmate who requested anonymity, the day was a memorable one.
“This is very warm and welcoming. I never thought that as prisoners, someone would think about us, especially when it is a prophet for that matter. I am grateful and this should be done not just for us but for everyone. God bless him,” he said.
His words were echoed by the prison’s chief correctional officer Brian Tekwa, who thanked Ufic for remembering the inmates.
“This will go a long way in rehabilitating them. We are grateful that society still remembers them,” he said.
“Many thanks to Ufic for their continued partnership with the prison services.
“The church has been donating in cash and kind. About two years ago they donated a borehole for our garden.
“We hope they continue helping us and I hope others will take a leaf and help us in future.”
The inmates had a chance to mingle with musicians such as Michael Mahendere and Leornad Zhakata, who are also pastors at Ufic.
Chikurubi Farm Prison holds prisoners with sentences not exceeding two years.
