Mighty Warriors eye Africa champs ticket

THE Mighty Warriors must overcome a stubborn Zambian football side in the second leg of their African Women’s Championship (AWC) qualifier at Rufaro Stadium today as they seek to take another step towards a maiden appearance at the Fifa Women’s World Cup next year.

Coach Sithethelelwe “Kwinji 15” Sibanda’s side claimed a 1-0 away win in Lusaka in the first leg on Wednesday‚ and will be hoping for no slip-ups to take victory in the tie and qualify for the AWC in Ghana in November.

There they will need to finish in the top three to seal a first-ever visit to the World Cup in France next year.

Zimbabwe have been boosted by the return of Spain-based striker Rutendo Makore, who scored the only goal of the match in Zambia last Wednesday, but coach Sibanda is not taking any chances ahead of the decisive clash today.

“Yes, we won 1-0, but we want to put that game behind us and look at Sunday’s game as a new game. We don’t want to keep thinking about what happened in Zambia as it will just disturb us,” she said.

Zimbabwe have qualified for four AWC finals since the inaugural edition of the women’s continental football championship in 1991.

The Mighty Warriors achieved their best placing on their debut appearance in 2000 when they finished fourth before being knocked out in the group stages in 2001, 2002 and 2016.
