Reacting to a story in which a Chinhoyi man, Emmanuel Chateka, found out that he was presumed dead when he went to verify his registration, Zvimba district registrar officer Florence Tahwa said such cases were prevalent, especially in farming communities.

Chateka’s death was recorded at Banket District hospital, Zvimba district, but investigations showed that his particulars were used on Esther Jonasi of Samos farm who died on September 15 2017.

Tahwa said some people faked deaths of their parents who lived in the diaspora  in order to get birth certificates. Others used documents that they picked up and others tried to use birth certificates to swindle insurance companies.

Chateka is now a registered voter after he successfully registered at Sinoia primary school.
