A hailstorm ravaged parts of Hurungwe onthe eve of Independence Day killing one farmer after a tobacco barn collapsed on him.
The violent storm left a trail of destruction while at least 23 families have been rendered homeless.
The deceased was identified as John Matenga of Masikati village, who had sought shelter in the barn when the violent hailstorm hit the area. A relative, David Matenga, said the deceased was buried at his rural home in Magunje on Friday.
Ward Six councillor Smart Sengere said at least 23 families were left homeless in Village 22 due to heavy rain and the hailstorm.
Sengere said several villagers lost their food stuff and property to the storm.
“We are appealing to well-wishers to help us. We are still assessing the damage caused, but people have no food and shelter as we speak,” he said.
Hurungwe district administrator Makepeace Muzenda, who heads local Civil Protection Unity, said she was out of the office and, therefore, could not comment.
