A 22-YEAR-OLD fisherman drowned in Negomo Dam in Chiweshe last Tuesday after an inflated tractor tube he was using capsized due to excessive wind.
Mashonaland Central deputy police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Petros Masikati confirmed the incident.
“I can confirm a case of sudden death in Chiweshe by drowning. A fisherman Richard Chirunga drowned while casting his nets using an inflated tractor tyre tube, which capsized and killed him,” Masikati said.
A witness, Edson Chirunga who is a brother of the late fisherman, said he saw him drowning and tried to rescue him but his efforts were fruitless.
Police warned fishermen to stop using inflated tractor tubes when casting their nets as it puts their lives in danger. — Simbarashe Sithole
