A sex-starved Mvurwi man escaped jail when he was sentenced to a wholly suspended sentence by a Guruve magistrate for assaulting his wife who had denied him his conjugal rights.

Zvidzai Chikashe (43) of Jam farm compound, Mvurwi, pleaded guilty to the charge and was slapped with a six-month jail term, which was wholly suspended on condition that he does not commit a similar offence in the next five years.

Prosecutor Carson Kundiona told the court that on March 15 at around 11pm, Charity Ndiweni (35), the convict’s wife, was asleep in their bedroom when her drunken husband arrived from the bar.

Chikashe demanded to be intimate with his wife, but she refused.

Chikashe grabbed Ndiweni by the collar, smashed her head on the wall several times before slapping her twice on the face. She sustained a swollen face and internal injuries, according to the medical report produced in court.

In mitigation, Chikashe told the court that he committed the offence when he was under the influence of alcohol and contributed towards his wife’s medical bills since he still takes care of her and loves her so much.
