The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) says it is worried about the rising number of people that commit suicide by jumping in front of moving trains.

NRZ spokesperson Nyasha Maravanyika said 12 people were run over by trains in the first half of the year.

“It is not proper to have such a high number of human fatalities of those being killed by trains yet our duty is to preserve life,” he said.

“This is happening throughout the country and it involves either those who will be making love with one another, the deaf, blind and others.

“The issue is, one cannot win an argument with a train and we encourage people not to use railway lines as death traps.”

Maravanyika said a high number of wild animals were also hit by trains.
