Good music and a well-organised act kept an intimate Theatre in The Park venue warm on Friday night during Afro-fusion musician Mbeu’s official release of his latest 10-track album.

Titled The Mhodzi Diaries 1, this project marks the beginning of a lengthy musical voyage for the late jazz icon Oliver Mtukudzi’s protégé — born Ashton Nyahore — where he intends to make a significant mark.

“I enjoyed every moment tonight because I have been working hard for this album and I am at a point where I feel that it’s a journey that has started that is why it is titled Mhodzi Diaries 1,” he told Standard Style after the performance that stretched over two hours.

Described as an authentic and mellow acoustic-inspired sound, Mbeu’s project, which was produced by the veteran Mono Mukundu, is an atomic expression waiting to explode into the ears of music lovers.

The Mhodzi Tribe band frontman is upbeat about the project:

“I’m going to make more music and we are going to deliver definitely, this talent is God-given and not that I am bragging, but I have confidence in the stuff that I make that it changes people’s lives,” he said.

Since the passing of Mtukudzi earlier this year, Mbeu has been leading the pack of Pakare Paye Arts Centre alumni in churning out good music and building a solid brand.

The Mavanga hit singer is one of the many names expected to prove the immense impact of Tuku’s illustrious career on the young generation, and that is a duty he has so far carried out well.

“I was supposed to release this album last year but couldn’t because of technical problems and the passing of Dr Mtukudzi, but now we have to carry on with the journey and implement what he taught us as well,” he said.

“He never left a void, but rather a legacy and those are the artistes he groomed and what they have to do is find their own path, make our own sound.”

Mbeu also promised more videos and collection of single tracks by the end of this year.
