Standard Chartered Bank is closing down its Gweru branch next month, saying most of its customers are moving to digital banking platforms.

Valeta Mthimkulu, the bank’s head of retail banking, said account holders from the Midlands capital would be transferred to the Bulawayo branch.

“We have also noted that our clients are preferring to transact more digitally, including on our recently launched SC Mobile App, our ATMs as well as our online and mobile banking,” Mthimkulu said in a statement.

“Following on the above and to align with global standards, we have relooked our distribution network and wish to advise that with effect from the 1st of October 2019 we will be closing the Gweru branch and all accounts will be domiciled at the Bulawayo branch.”

The closure means that the bank will no longer have an outlet in Midlands after it closed its Kwekwe branch.
