Zim author’s novel to be republished in UK

United Kingdom-based publishing house, Fairfield Press, says it will re-issue Zimbabwean author Spiwe Mahachi-Harper’s award-winning novel titled Footprints in the Mists of Time.

Mahachi-Harper’s publisher Masimba Musodza confirmed the development.

Footprints in the Mists of Time, Mahachi-Harper’s third novel, was printed first by Lion Press of United Kingdom in 2013.

The novel tells the compelling story of the effects of migration on a migrant and his offspring.

Masimba Musodza summaries the novel: “[It’s] a story of migration, belonging and identity in the context of colonialism and post-colonialism. A family saga that begins at the turn of the 20th century, as Bhaureni leaves his young wife and joins his peers on the long trek from Nkhotakota in Nyasaland, across what was still mostly untamed land, to the British colony of Southern Rhodesia.”

Since its initial publication, the book has received highly favourable reviews locally, regionally and internationally.

“This is going to be an important novel for Zimbabwean literature. Zimbabwean fiction rarely puts the migrant and his offspring at the centre of a narrative.

But here is a novel written from their point of view,” wrote Memory Chirere in a review which was published in a local daily.

The book won the Zimbabwe Music and Arts Award in 2013 and was nominated for the Zimbabwe National Merit Award in 2014.

Mahachi-Harper (55) is a teacher by profession. Her passion for writing has seen her poems, short stories, articles and other forms of writing published by different publishing houses.

She spends her time between her native land of Zimbabwe and her adopted country, UK.
