A man from a squatter camp on the outskirts of Bulawayo drowned while trying to swim in a pit dug by council for waste disposal.

Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube said the yet-to-be-dentified man  from Ngozi Mine was in the company of his two minor children when disaster struck.

“On May 1 at around 3pm a resident received information  from an unknown person that the now-deceased, a male adult aged 53 years of Ngozi mine, had dived into a pit full of water and drowned,” Ncube said.

“The pit measures approximately 75 metres  by 25 metres and about 5 metres deep.”

He said the sub-aqua unit attended the scene.
