Former Zimbabwe cricket captain Elton Chigumbura is aiming to set provincial training centres for his academy, Elton Chigumbura Cricket Academy, as he aims to give a lifeline to underprivileged and budding cricketers in the country.

A veteran of many battles over the past 16 years during which he served as Zimbabwe’s limited-overs captain from August 2014 before stepping down in January 2016, Chigumbura is now focused on carving out the next generation of the country’s cricketers.

The 35-year-old is eager to pave way for young blood in the national set-up and is in the process of partnering different stakeholders from all provinces in this cause.

In the Midlands province, he has identified the Gweru Sports Club and Kwekwe Sports Club as potential hosts for his growing academy.

“The academy aims to have centres in all provinces in Zimbabwe and Gweru Sports Club has been identified as a potential venue for the academy.

“The academy will be working on a development programme aimed at giving equal opportunity to all players through high-level coaching.

“The academy looks to go into schools across Gweru introducing and coaching cricket especially to underprivileged kids within children’s homes across Gweru.

“In realising the available opportunity for girls, we will be targeting both boys and girls,” Chigumbura said in a letter to the Gweru Sports Club.

The well-travelled Highfield-bred cricketer will be working with analyst and sports scientist Keith Kulinga in his bid to offer a life-changing opportunity to budding cricketers.
