BY NKOSENTSHA KHUMALO Pumula Royal Arts and Community Awards (Praca), Home of Arts Entertainment (HAE) have set December 17 as the date for this year’s edition of the awards ceremony.

HAE is a youth arts organisation which seeks to provide up-and-coming artists with a platform to share and showcase their talents.

In a statement, the awards founder and HAE executive director Happy Mpofu  announced that submissions for the awards will open from September 15 until late October.

“Submissions for the awards for works produced between July 31, 2021 and August 10, 2022 shall be considered and are acceptable both physically and online. Submissions can be in the form of CDs, USBs, links or emails,” partly read the statement.

“The third edition of Pumula Royal Arts and Community Awards seeks to create a stage for artists to showcase their talents and at the same time create awareness on issues that affect the youth.”

Submission details include: Name of artists, group, association, gallery or production house, project involved, category being submitted for, date of creation, email address, location and contact number.

Praca’s major objectives are to build and mould up-and-coming artists, advocate for opportunities for artists, fight drug and substance abuse, among others.

“The first day shall include the Praca street festival where nominated artists will be creating awareness on issues affecting our community such as drug and substance abuse, gender-based violence and sexual harassment,” Mpofu stated.

Mpofu further indicated that the artists will share information regarding safety issues on public spaces and transport, noting that the street festival will enable artists to build good relations with audience.

The second day will host film screening.

“On day two, we observed from our last two editions that the audience may not be familiar with most of the nominated films and we saw it necessary to have a film screening while having nominees’ dinner,” he said.

At the nominee dinner is where all arts affiliated stakeholders and organisations are invited to participate in a dialogue that will be held during the film screening.

“After film screening a dialogue will be held to tackle issues that would have been portrayed in the films. This will also be a platform to create good relationships between the artists and corporates for opportunities,” he added.

Mpofu also called for partnerships, sponsorships and any contributions that can assist in making the awards ceremony a success.
