Mr Ugly Zimbabwe is back

THE popular Mr Ugly pageant is set to bounce back on the entertainment scene after a five-year sabbatical.

According to the organiser, David “Apama” Machowa, a number of contests will be held across the country starting from next month.

“We have been quiet for some time, and we are back on the radar. We could not hold the contest due to a number of reasons, among them the COVID-19 pandemic,” he said.

“Starting from next month, we are going to hold a number of contests in both towns and cities, starting with Chiredzi. We are looking forward to having at least 22 contestants at the national finals to be held later this year.”

The reigning Mr Ugly Zimbabwe is Maison Sere, who snatched the title from perennial winner William Masvinu.

The 2015 edition recorded the largest number of contestants as 36 men wanted to participate in the competition.

However, a semi-final event was held to trim the finalists to 12.

The contest started in 2011 and was won by Brian Mateyazondo, who went on to lose it to Masvinu the following year.

From 2012, Masvinu monopolised the title for years before losing it to Sere in a tight contest.

After his defeat, Masvinu, a porter in Mbare, became violent, accusing the judges of being unfair.

The contest has become a popular event despite lack of sponsorship, which has seen winners walking away with just a few dollars.
