The National Railways of Zimbabwe has reported that a train derailed between Mutare and Machipinda on Monday night, killing three crew members who were on board.

In a statement, NRZ said a locomotive, which was pulling 14 wagons laden with chrome concentrates meant for export and five granite blocks, likely suffered a brake failure and fell into a gorge after failing to negotiate a sharp turn around 2100hrs.

"Three NRZ crew members were trapped and could not make it to safety, their identities cannot be divulged until their next of kin have been advised.

"The NRZ board, management and staff would like to express sincere condolences to the families of the hardworking, dedicated crew members who shall always be remembered by the Railways family.”
