Mafume set to retain Mayoral post

Citizens Coalitions for Change (CCC) councillor, Jacob Mafume, expected to retain his post.

HARARE City Council (HCC) will elect its new mayor on Monday with Citizens Coalitions for Change (CCC) councillor, Jacob Mafume, expected to retain his post.

Fifty-nine Harare City Councillors were sworn in on Thursday.

Addressing the councillors, Town Clerk Hosea Chisango said elections to choose the city’s mayor and deputy will be held on Monday.

There are 40 CCC councillors against 5 from Zanu PF.

Fourteen councillors got into council through the women’s quota system - four from Zanu PF and 10 from the opposition.

CCC sources said Mafume looked set to retain the post for taking the Zanu PF led government head on for interfering with council operations.

Mafume vowed that Harare City Council will not pay US$3,5 million to Geogenix BV Limited after cancelling the much-publicised deal with the Netherlands-based company.

Harare Residents Trust Association (HRT) executive director, Precious Shumba, urged councillors to elect a responsible person to lead the city.

“Residents want service delivery to top notch across the board. The mayor is the chief policy maker of a city or municipality,” he said.

“The focus should be in delivering goods and services to the satisfaction and well-being of the residents of Harare. Partisan politics has no place in council administration.”
