Zimbabwe National Revival Party (ZNRP), an opposition party, has condemned the move by Zanu PF to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa's tenure beyond 2028 saying the move has fatal economic consequences.
In a press statement released after a national executive meeting held in Harare yesterday, ZNRP president Amon Maisvoreva said extending Mnangagwa's rule was suicidal as it scares away foreign investment.
“Investors favour stable, predictable democratic environments as a party we feel that this proposed constitutional amendment will scare off foreign investment,” Maisvoreva said.
“The move will definitely reduce economic growth and job opportunities, it will exacerbate poverty and inequality.
“We must prioritise economic prosperity for citizens , not the interests of a ruling elite.”
Zanu PF resolved to push for a constitutional amendment to allow Mnangagwa to rule for a further two years.
The resolution was made during the party's 22nd annual people's conference held in Mutare recently.
Maisvoreva added that it is high time that regional bodies intervene and save Zimbabwe from isolation.

“Both Sadc and AU should come in and promote democratic governance and term limits, this amendment will isolate Zimbabwe regionally and internationally,” he said.
Mnangagwa has however said he is not interested in ruling beyond 2028 describing himself as a constitutionalist.
