Shot in the arm for people with disabilities

Craft Properties Holdings CEO Kudakwashe Taruberekera said the gesture was inspired by the government’s philosophy of “leaving no one and no place behind.”

People with disabilities have received a major boost after Craft Properties Holdings donated residential stands as part of its corporate social responsibility initiative.

Ten beneficiaries received fully serviced stands in Kadoma’s Holyland high-density suburb — but the support went even further.

Each recipient walked away not only with land, but with approved building plans already processed in their names.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Mashonaland West Provincial Affairs and Devolution minister Marian Chombo  hailed the initiative.

“This ties in with the government's drive to ensure no one or place is left behind towards upper middle-income status by 2030,” Chombo said.

“We are happy because of the strong complementary role that the private sector is playing to support the government's drive to improve the lives of its people.”

Craft Properties Holdings CEO Kudakwashe Taruberekera said the gesture was inspired by the government’s philosophy of “leaving no one and no place behind.”

“President.(Emmerson) Mnangagwa has set the tone and we are following in his footsteps. As a nation, we must ensure that people with disabilities are not left behind,” Taruberekera said.

“What we have done today is not charity — it is restoring dignity. Everyone deserves a home and a fair chance. We will continue supporting those who need help the most.”

Philanthropist Jimayi Muduvuri, known for championing the rights of people with disabilities, applauded the initiative.

“This is exactly the kind of leadership we want from the private sector. When individuals like Professor Taruberekera step up, it eases pressure on the government and accelerates development,” Muduvuri said.

“I urge more companies and philanthropists to follow this example so that people with disabilities are included in every aspect of national progress.”

Several beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the life-changing support.

“This stand means security for my family. I have been renting and moving from place to place for years, but today I finally feel seen and valued. I never imagined I would own a place I can call home,” one beneficiary said.

Another, a person with albinism, shared their relief:

“I have faced discrimination all my life. Landlords often chase me away because of my skin condition. This gesture is a huge relief — my family finally has stability.”

Meanwhile, additional support for people with disabilities is expected soon. A shipment of 150 wheelchairs for school-going children with disabilities is on the way, aligning with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education’s 5.0 policy, which prioritises inclusive learning and equal access to education.

Communities benefiting from Craft Properties’ interventions have also seen progress through ongoing rural development projects. These include the construction of Kaiva Primary School in Nyaminyami, Kariba, and the installation of solar systems in schools in Gokwe, improving access to education in remote areas.

Craft Properties Holdings’ efforts continue to receive recognition, with the company recently earning nominations for two categories — Corporate Social Responsibility Award and Outstanding Property Developer — at the prestigious 2025 Mashonaland West Excellence Awards.
