A prominent Italian journalist, Sigfrido Ranucci, is on the trail of a businessman from his country who is said to have swindled millions of dollars in a carbon credits project after claiming to be connected with President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Ranucci is the deputy director of Rai Tre and host of Report, an in-depth investigative journalism programme on RAI, Italy’s prominent public broadcaster.
The prominence of Ranucci, particularly in Europe, has put Zimbabwe in the spotlight regarding whether or not it is a safe investment destination for foreign investors.
Zimbabwe, under Mnangagwa, says it is "open for business" and has been re-engaging with Europe in efforts to return the country to its former glory as the breadbasket of Southern Africa.
Ranucci is a highly respected investigative journalist in Europe. His investigations into international issues involving corruption connected to the United States, Albanian organised crime, Libya, and other global affairs have always received extensive media coverage.
These reports have been discussed by numerous newspapers and media outlets across many countries, helping to draw public attention to issues of great importance.
Ranucci is said to be angling for an interview with Zimbabwe’s leadership to better understand how the international press views Zimbabwe, and how it is paying attention to episodes of grand corruption reportedly taking place in the country.
Of late, accusations have emerged of individuals reportedly using the name of the president to swindle money from individuals and organisations.
