Comedian fined for drink-driving

An alcohol test revealed that the comedian had an alcohol concentration of 160mg per 100ml, more than three times the country’s prescribed legal limit.

Comedian and social media personality Theophilus Gabriel Chigumira, popularly known as ‘Mai Clifford,’ has been fined US$200 after pleading guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol.

Chigumira was prohibited from driving for six months by the Harare magistrates’ court.

The court heard that he was found to be under the influence of alcohol on 11 July while driving along the Newlands Roundabout on ED Mnangagwa Road in Harare.

An alcohol test revealed that the comedian had an alcohol concentration of 160mg per 100ml, more than three times the country’s prescribed legal limit.

Chigumira was subsequently charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol.

“The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) urges motorists to never get behind the wheel after consuming alcohol as impaired driving poses a serious threat to the safety of all road users,” the NPAZ said in a statement.

“The Authority will continue to prosecute offenders in line with the law to promote safer roads and prevent avoidable road traffic tragedies.”
