The Stanley Urayayi (SU) Chess tournament, which was held this week at Makoni Country Club in Rusape, Manicaland province, attracted over 60 players from across all ages.
The tournament was named after the late national hero Stanley Urayayi Sakupwanya.
The late retired colonel was a politburo member, who died in 2014 and was buried at the National Heroes Acre.
The tournament was held to ensure that young people shun drugs and interact together and sharing ideas.
Several prizes were won including medals.
Zanu PF Manicaland youth leader and Parliamentary youth caucus chairperson Stanley Sakupwanya applauded some bussiness persons and successful home grown youth from Rusape for giving a helping hand in funding the tournament.
"The motive behind this tournament was to ensure that young people are always active and are not left idle, so that they avoid drug abuse, something which has become a cancer in our communities and something we need to tackle,"he said
"The Chess tournament is our small way of giving to the community here in Rusape where l grew up and we invited all ages to participate and suprise them with some prize giving gifts," he said.

"Almost 60 players came to the fore and we had some good prize winners including the best chess young players and the best female player," Sakupwanya said.
"We are trying to have a scenario this tournament is played every three months and we appreciate all stakeholders in sponsoring the tournament so it's not just my oneself and my personal initiative, we do have other people from Rusape, some bussiness players, some home grown youths who have done well in their business have played their part in ensuring that this tournament success continues to go on," he said.
"We are proud that the young players showed an aspect of discipline," he added.
"To mention again the reason why we called this tournament the Stanley Urayayi, one of our national heroes from Makoni particularly Rusape district is the doctor Urayi Sakupwanya who happens to be my father. He was a medical doctor who started a surgery in Rusape and he used to treat a lot of patients, some for free hence in honoring him as one of our national heroes, we thought it appropriate to name the tournament SU taking his initials," Sakupwanya added.
