Amakhosi star Dube dreams big after heroics

Amakhosi 1’s Dumoluhle Dube, a 27-year-old spin bowler, showcased a remarkable return to form, claiming a five-wicket haul to lead his team to a thrilling 25-run victory over Westside in a National Premier League (NPL) match at Masvingo Cricket Club last week.

The performance was a stunning reversal of fortunes for Dube, who in his first match of the season failed to take a single wicket, conceding 54 runs.

Against Westside, Dube was unplayable, finishing with figures of 5 for 38 in his 9 overs, a performance he described as a great feeling.

"It has been a great feeling to achieve this milestone, especially that I helped contribute to the club's victory against Westside. It has been hard work and dedication," Dube said, reflecting on his match-winning spell.

His heroics with the ball have already surpassed his entire NPL performance from the previous season, where he took four wickets in three matches.

Dube, a former Queens Sports Club player, is keen on building on this success.

"My targets in the competition this year is for the club to continue experiencing success as we have been enjoying and try and finish as high possible in the log.

“Personally, I have been really working hard on my bowling and I'm hoping to continue experiencing success by taking as many wickets as possible," he said.

With just two appearances this season, Dube has already made his mark on the competition, placing him among the top 50 bowlers with an average of 18.4 and an economy of 5.11.

Dube's journey in cricket began at a young age at Centenary Primary School under the guidance of coach Godwin Dube.

He continued his cricket career at CBC Bulawayo and later CBC Mount Edmund Pretoria, where he captained the team and was named cricketer of the year for two consecutive years.

His talent was recognised when he was selected for the provisional Northerns Under-17A team. After high school, he played for Moot Cricket Club in the Pretoria Presidential League, where he was the leading wicket-taker in his second season.

After a hiatus to pursue his studies in investment management and banking at the University of Free State, Dube returned to the game with a renewed passion.

He joined Queens Sports Club, where he was the leading wicket-taker in the BMCA 1st League with 22 wickets in 12 games in 2023.

That same year, he also topped the charts in the inaugural Provisional Associates League, taking 13 wickets in four games, including a remarkable 8 for 8 against Mash Central.

Dube's ambitions are clear and resolute.

"My big dream at the moment is to represent the national team in the next World Cup," he stated.

Amakhosi 1, thanks in part to Dube's exceptional bowling, currently sits in five place in the NPL standings with five wins from seven matches.
