Relegation-threatened Triangle FC caused a major upset yesterday, dumping high-flying debutants MWOS FC out of the Chibuku Super Cup with a convincing 2-0 victory at Ngoni Stadium to reach the final.
MWOS FC were looking to secure the country’s premier knockout competition, especially as the league title appears to be out of their reach with only a few matches remaining.
They were hoping to emulate Ngezi Platinum Stars, who won the Cup in their debut season back in 2016.
Triangle opened the scoring barely four minutes into the game, against the run of play. Striker Elton Njini did well on the left flank before squaring the ball to an unmarked Witness Shave, who placed the ball beyond MWOS FC goalkeeper Martin Mapisa.
From that point, it was MWOS who pressed hard for an equaliser. They were arguably the better side in terms of possession and chances created throughout the match, but their poor finishing proved costly.
In the 14th minute, Billy Veremu's header flew just over the bar after a tremendous cross from Martin Matinha. MWOS also had chances through Matinha, Farai Banda, and Tafadzwa Nyabunze. Innocent Zambezi was denied by the crossbar after the hour mark.

Triangle, despite being under pressure, had an opportunity to double their lead on the stroke of halftime when Vince Mero blazed over an open goal.
MWOS continued to dominate the second half but still struggled to trouble the visitors' keeper. Zambezi found the target again, but Wilson Changani made a comfortable save.
The introduction of the ageless Ali Sadiki breathed new life into Triangle’s attack. Sadiki could have made it two himself but was thwarted by Mapisa.
Moments later, he turned provider for fellow substitute Menford Mudzimu, who ended the match as a contest with a smart finish from close range in the final 10 minutes.
MWOS Coach Lloyd Mutasa was visibly disappointed after the final whistle.
"Yeah, very, very disappointing, very disappointing performance," Mutasa said.
"We are very sorry to our fans, who have been here all this long to come and witness this. We thought we might at least fight to win this cup after working hard from the onset, but it wasn't to be.
“We are sorry to all our stakeholders that we have been eliminated from this cup, and I want to believe that this is one of our worst games that we have played here."
Triangle Coach Genesis Mangombe credited his team’s preparation for the victory.
"I think we prepared very well for a Cup game because, for you to progress in a Cup match, you don't need to concede, and you also need to score," Mangombe stated.
"I am happy with the way we created chances. Though in the early stages our opponents were far much better than us and failed to capitalise on the chances, we fixed our problems at halftime, managed to trouble them, and eventually scored another goal."
Triangle are now looking for their second Chibuku Super Cup title, having previously won the competition in 2018.
