Reggae enthusiasts should brace for a treat on May 30 when the inaugural Reggae Roadblock series concert kicks off at the Green Cinema Jam Tree in Harare.
This zapping quarterly occasion celebrates the substance of roots and reggae as it aims to become Zimbabwe’s premier stage for reggae music and culture.
Roots and reggae Roots reggae, a subgenre of reggae, signifies music that explores themes of black liberation, spirituality and the everyday struggles of marginalised communities, particularly those in the African Diaspora and those influenced by Rastafarian beliefs.
“The show will feature a dynamic lineup of Zimbabwe’s top reggae artists: Cello Culture, Buhle, Jr Bantan, Mannex Motsi, Mr Muffin, Sniper Storm, Dino Mudondo, Helgah, and Satisfaction, all backed by the legendary House of Stone Band and hosted by MC J Boss,” the organisers said in a statement.
Reggae Roadblock draws inspiration from Robert Nesta Marley’s iconic 1980 performance in Zimbabwe, aims to revive the unifying spirit of reggae music, the organiers said.
The concert provides a platform for traditional reggae artists and fans, which has been seemingly shadowed by the emergency Zimdancehall an offspring of Jamaican dancehall, which celebrates nudity, violence and drugs.
Reggae Meets Fashion will also showcase Zimbabwe’s vibrant fashion scene.
