Chibuku Neshamwari enters second week

Chibuku Neshamwari Traditional Dance Festival

The Chibuku Neshamwari Traditional Dance Festival yesterday entered its second week with a provincial competition held in Mutare.

The competition, which is held in partnership with the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) and the Zimbabwe National Traditional Dance Association (ZNTDA), kicked off on May 10 with a Midlands province showdown at Mkoba 4 in Gweru.

Yesterday Muchina Muhombe Bar in Mutare hosted the Manicaland provincial competitions.

Next Saturday all roads will lead to Lwendulu Bar in Hwange and Banket's EMM Leisure Sports Bar for the Matabeleland North and Mashonaland West showdowns respectively.

This year’s festival is running under the theme Ngoma Ngairire Shamwari, Tshay’sgubhu Mngane.

“This year's festival promises to be a vibrant celebration of our culture and heritage through traditional dance,” the organisers said in a statement.

“With a legacy spanning over 60 years, the award-winning Chibuku Neshamwari festival is gearing up to be an exciting event as it connects with consumers through the passion and expression of culture, dance, and heritage.”

Chibuku Neshamwari started on May 10 and will end on July 19.

As a build-up, 10 provincial finals will be held, leading up to the national finals.

Participants stand a chance to walk away with monetary prizes at both provincial and national level.

Last year’s winners came from Mashonaland East province, having showcased the Mbende dance.

The provincial final will see winners walk away US$2 500 with first runner and second runner up pocketing US$1 500 and US$1 000 respectively.

The grand prize is US$15 000 with the first runner up walking home US$10 000 while second runner up pockets US$7 500.

The organisers have urged aspiring participants to register their groups with the NACZ and ZNTDA.
