The second edition of the Goldswift U1800 FIDE Rated Open Chess Tournament is set to take place from November 29–30, 2025, at The Heritage School in Harare.

This event unites some of Zimbabwe’s most promising developing chess players, enhancing their skills and fostering competitive spirit.

Introduced in 2024, the tournament has quickly established itself as one of the country’s leading platforms for sub-1800 rated players seeking professional competition and international rating exposure.

The inaugural edition last year attracted over 140 participants and showcased a blend of rising junior stars and seasoned club competitors.

Organised by Zim Chess Consultancy (Private) Limited and sanctioned by the Zimbabwe Chess Federation, the Goldswift U1800 Open will feature a six-round Swiss format, played under a time control of 60 minutes, with an additional ten-second increment per move.

Tournament director Lawrence Tavagwisa emphasised the event's significance in building robust competitive structures in Zimbabwean chess,

“We created the Goldswift U1800 Open to provide a professional and realistic competitive pathway for improving players,” he said.

“There is enormous talent in Zimbabwe, but limited opportunities for developing players to gain rating experience. Our vision is to help bridge that gap and propel Zimbabwean chess forward in a structured, sustainable manner,” Tavagwisa said.

The tournament is generously sponsored by Goldswift Construction, affirming its dedication to supporting this initiative following its successful inaugural edition. Goldswift Construction CEO Budwell Nziramasanga elaborated on the broader impact of such partnerships highlighting their commitment to promoting discipline.

“Chess builds discipline, focus, strategic thinking, and resilience, qualities that are essential both in life and in professional spaces,” he said.

“Supporting this event allows us to help young people grow in the right direction. We believe that empowering the next generation through sport is an investment in Zimbabwe’s future,” Nziramasanga said.

As players from Harare and other centres, including Bulawayo and the Midlands, gather for the tournament, the event's national footprint is further solidified and Nziramasanga said the tournament aligns with ongoing efforts by government and other partners to raise responsible youths especially in the face of drug and substance abuse.

“This initiative dovetails seamlessly with ongoing efforts by the Zimbabwe Chess Federation and various development organizations to combat social ills, such as drug and substance abuse, through constructive engagement.

“By providing a platform that emphasizes the importance of intellectual and strategic pursuits, the Goldswift U1800 Open not only fosters a spirit of competition but also promotes responsible behavior among youths and students,” Nziramsanga said.

With rising participation, improved venues, and expanding corporate support, the Goldswift U1800 Open is emerging as a key highlight on Zimbabwe’s annual chess calendar.

Over a thousand guests are expected to attend, including students and parents, creating a vibrant atmosphere for interaction and learning.

In the spirit of inclusivity and cooperation towards common good, Nziramasanga invited corporates that want to sponsor and exhibit at the event to engage with organisers so that they can also enjoy amazing brand placement opportunities.

“We invite corporate organisations interested in sponsoring the event to join us in this meaningful initiative,” he said.

“This is an excellent opportunity not only to contribute to community development but also to showcase your products and services directly to a diverse audience of students and families attending the tournament.

“By participating as sponsors or exhibitors, companies can engage with an eager audience, making valuable connections and promoting responsible community initiatives,”

This annual event stands as a testament to how corporate synergies can effectively promote talent and drive positive change in society, creating a landscape where young minds can thrive in a nurturing environment.

As the tournament approaches, anticipation builds among participants and supporters alike, underscoring the integral role of Goldswift Construction in shaping not just the future of chess in Zimbabwe, but also in enriching the lives of the next generation through strategic play and invaluable life lessons.
