Outcry as producer Maselo snubbed in Zanu PF freebie drive

Tapiwa “Maselo Pabeata” Jera

The ruling Zanu PF party is facing criticism for allegedly sidelining veteran music producer Tapiwa “Maselo Pabeata” Jera, despite his long-standing contribution to the party through music and political jingles.

Maselo, who has spent over a decade in the music industry, has produced numerous songs and jingles for artists who openly align themselves with Zanu PF.

His work has become a familiar feature at party rallies and political gatherings across the country.

Artists who have worked with Maselo include Diana Samkange, Andy Muridzo, Chief Hwenje, Honourable Tawaz, Gushungo, Baba Troy, Baba Harare and Suluman Chimbetu, among others.

Several of these musicians have been regularly invited to perform at Zanu PF rallies and have reportedly received remuneration for their participation.

Some have even been gifted vehicles by flamboyant businessman Sir Wicknell Chivayo.

However, concerns have been raised over Maselo’s apparent exclusion from party events and benefits, despite his significant behind-the-scenes role.

This comes amid reports that producers who have not produced any Zanu PF-related music — such as Tadex and Levels Ghost Magician — are being invited to rallies ahead of him.

Music lovers and industry observers have questioned the apparent inconsistency.

“Maselo is a renowned producer who created a lot of music played at Zanu PF rallies. Why is he being left out while others are being called and paid?” asked John Garwe.

Another music enthusiast, Sarah Gumigora, urged the ruling party to recognise those who have consistently contributed.

“It is no secret that Maselo did a lot of commendable work for the party through jingles and songs that support Zanu PF. There should be fairness,” she said.

Maselo declined to comment on the matter when approached.

Efforts to get a comment from Zanu PF commissar Munyaradzi Machacha were unsuccessful at the time of publication.
