Dzikwa Trust: Over 30 years of impacting lives

Dzikwa Trust

For over three decades, Dzikwa Trust has been at the heart of transformative change in Zimbabwe, impacting lives and communities through dedicated service and support.

Founded on principles of compassion and empowerment, the organization focuses on education, health, and community development, striving to uplift the most vulnerable members of society.

Yet, despite its significant accomplishments, Dzikwa Trust faces a pressing challenge, competing needs that consistently outweigh available resources.

The history of Dzikwa Trust dates back to the early 1990s. Its founder trustee, Seppo Ainamo, arrived in Zimbabwe seeking work and was profoundly affected by the stark realities faced by vulnerable communities.

Witnessing the level of poverty and lack in these areas ignited a passion within him to create change. In 1992, what began as a family initiative to assist the less privileged quickly evolved into something much greater.

By 2002, Dzikwa Trust was officially registered as a Private Voluntary Organisation (PVO), and since then, it has expanded its reach and enhanced its impact on countless lives.

Throughout its journey, Dzikwa Trust has made remarkable strides.

The organisation has successfully implemented numerous programs aimed at improving educational outcomes for children, providing health services to underserved communities, and fostering skills development among youths and adults.

The trust’s adaptability in response to the evolving challenges faced by communities has solidified its reputation as a leader in humanitarian efforts.

Significant milestones include partnerships with the government of Finland through the Children of Zimbabwe Society, as well as support from the embassies of Australia, Canada, Japan, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. International organisations like Unicef, UNDP and the OAK Foundation have also played crucial roles in driving targeted assistance and investment in Dzikwa’s projects.

Oili Wuolle, the Dzikwa Trust programmes director, shared the organisation’s operational achievements and the profound impact they have made.

“We are immensely grateful for the partnerships we have established over the years,” she said.

“The support from past and current partners has been fundamental in enabling us to achieve our mission.

“However, our journey is marked by the complexities of dynamic community challenges.

“Beyond our current focus areas where we already have existing budget shortfalls, issues such as drug and substance abuse, gender-based violence, and sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR) are rising and we are working diligently to explore ways to mitigate these pressing challenges.”

Reflecting on the importance of partnerships founding trustee Ainamo also commended the support and humanitarian space afforded by key stakeholders including the government.

“We owe a great debt of gratitude to all our stakeholders, including the government of Zimbabwe, which has provided us with the humanitarian space needed to work within local communities. Their support empowers us to make a genuine difference,” he said.

Dzikwa Trust has launched essential initiatives, including educational programs that have opened doors for thousands of children to access quality schooling, and health programs that have significantly improved maternal and child health outcomes.

The establishment of vocational training centres has empowered countless individuals to acquire skills necessary for employment and self-sufficiency.

Moreover, the organisation has made strides in climate action, actively investing in sustainable practices such as tree planting initiatives aimed at mitigating environmental challenges.

“We plan to do even more in this regard, as we recognize that the well-being of our communities and our environment are intrinsically linked,” Wuolle shared.

However, the organisation recognises that the journey is far from complete.

With competing needs constantly outpacing available resources, Dzikwa Trust finds itself in an urgent appeal for support.

“While we are proud of our accomplishments, the reality remains that many lives are still waiting for change. The needs in our communities grow daily, and without increased support locally and internationally, our capacity to effect meaningful change will be significantly limited,” Wuolle said.

What has kept Dzikwa Trust steadfast in its mission is a commitment to good corporate governance, bolstered by a competent and dedicated team of staff and volunteers.

The organization prides itself on transparency and accountability, ensuring that resources are utilised effectively and that the impact of every dollar spent is maximized.

The rigorous approach to management has earned the trust of its partners and fortified relationships with dedicated supporters who believe in the cause.

Dzikwa Trust emphasises that every contribution, whether financial or in-kind helps to alleviate some of the burdens faced by disadvantaged communities.

“Each donation empowers us to expand our programs, reach more individuals, and create sustainable change. We invite individuals, businesses, and organisations to join us in making a difference, to stand with us as we strive to meet the needs of those less fortunate,” Wuolle said.

As the trust looks to the future, it remains focused on scaling its impact and broadening its reach.

With additional funding and support, the organization aims to enhance its existing programmes while exploring new avenues for assistance.

This will not only sustain its operations but significantly amplify its impact on the lives of many.

In celebrating over 30 years of impacting lives, Dzikwa Trust stands as a testament to the power of compassion, governance, and community.

The emotional narrative woven into its history reveals a relentless commitment to making a better future for those it serves. However, the work is far from done, and now more than ever, the call for support is crucial.

Wuolle stressed the importance of broadening their support network.

“We invite individual philanthropists, corporates, aid agencies, embassies, and any partners who may want to support our work to reach out,” she said.

“Together, we can be a force for change, ensuring that Dzikwa Trust continues to be a beacon of hope for those in need, changing lives one at a time.”
