Mashonaland West to get three new community radio stations

Sanyati, Chegutu and Karoi are set to benefit from new community radio stations following the Government’s gazetting of additional broadcasting licences, in a move aimed at decentralising access to information.

The Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe (BAZ) has opened applications for community radio licences in 18 areas nationwide, including the three in Mashonaland West.

The initiative is expected to boost media diversity and give local communities a stronger voice through platforms that reflect their cultures, stories and development priorities.

Other areas earmarked for community radio stations include Guruve, Mwenezi, Tsholotsho, Nkayi, Gokwe North (Nemangwe), Mberengwa, Bikita, Zaka, Wedza, Buhera, Zvishavane, Mutoko, Muzarabani, Rushinga and Chiweshe.

Interested applicants can collect forms from BAZ offices in Harare or download them online. Submissions are due within 90 days from the date of publication.

Community radio stations play a critical role in promoting local content, strengthening community engagement and supporting grassroots development.

They also create employment opportunities for journalists, content producers and technicians, while offering affordable advertising platforms for small businesses.

Mashonaland West currently has three community radio stations — Kasambabezi FM in Kariba, Platinum FM and CUT FM in Chinhoyi.

The addition of Sanyati, Chegutu and Karoi will bring the provincial total to six, significantly expanding access to community broadcasting.
