Stunner dominates Hip Hop Awards

By Michael Shoko Stunner emerged the biggest winner at the Inaugural Zim Hip Hop Awards that took place on Wednesday night at the 7 Arts Theatre, in Avondale.

The Godo hit-maker who made headlines earlier this week with his sex tape that was leaked onto the Internet and local press was nominated in four categories and walked away with three.

He won the Best Male Hip Hop artist, Best Hip Hop Video for his chat-topping song Godo and the most coveted best Hip Hop Song of the year for the song Godo.

“My talent has nothing to do with my private life…thank you all for supporting me and also thank you to my girl for holding it down through thick and thin…you can’t keep a good man down,” said a visibly shaken Stunner who was flanked by his girlfriend Pokello Nare, friend Dzikamai Chibaya and Ba Shupi.

The best Female Hip Hop Artist went to the late Amelia in absentia shrugging off challenge from Deejay Naida and upcoming Trae Yung.It was an emotional moment in the auditorium as the audience gave a standing ovation, with many failing to control their tears as her family, led by Amelia’s mother, went to the podium to receive the award on her behalf.

“I know Amelia is singing in the heavens right now…,” said Amelia’s mother who couldn’t finish her speech as she was overcome by emotions. Amelia died on July 30.

Elton Bryce, Amelia’s producer thanked everyone who voted for the late rapper saying she was not only an artist but a musical lifestyle that possessed a rare talent.

The Best Collaboration went to Junior Brown and MC Chita for their song, The voice. The duo who gave a five star performance on the night also won the Best Hip Hop album of the year.

Talented performances from Taurai Mandebvu, Tehn Diamond, Mariachi, High Definition and Deejay Naida kept hip hop lovers on the edge of their seats but the night belonged to South African dance crew Artistic Intelligence who wowed the crowd with scintillating moves much to the delight of the appreciative crowd who gave them a thunderous applause.

Young rappers Mariachi and Alkamai took the Best Hip Hop Album Art for their piece Purple Blazer while promoter Dizzy Don beat, Take 5 to land the Best Hip hop promoter of the year.

German based Metaphysics won Best Hip Hop in the Diaspora and Rumbidzai Moyo better known as L.O.D was given best Hip hop Power Fm Dj.Other winners were Mix Masterz for best Hip Hop Producer while the Best Newcomer was A.M.V.I.S, Best Hip Hop dance Crew- High Definition.The People’s choice award which was presented by the reigning Miss Universe Zimbabwe, Lisa Morgan went to P.O.Y.Hip hop legend Shingirai Mau Mau was honored with the Lifetime Award.
