Sources told The Standard yesterday that soldiers based at Kariba heights invaded Nyamhunga Stadium — the venue of the primaries — and started to beat members indiscriminately.

The primaries would now be held today.

MDC-T Provincial secretary-Greenwitch Ndanga confirmed the developments saying it was “an unfortunate incident as soldiers continue meddling into party politics against the body and spirit of GPA [Global Political Agreement]”.

Ndanga said a white Mitsubishi came at a high speed towards their members at the stadium and some had to flee for dear life.

MDC-T claimed that the vehicle belongs to senior army officer who reside in Kariba.

The soldiers disembarked and started beating up MDC-T members, seriously injuring organising secretary of Ward 7, Daniel Joseph. At the time of going to print last night, MDC-T members were still trying to make a report at Nyamhunga police station.

In Harare, three MPs failed to garner enough votes for confirmation yesterday. In Highfield West Moses Manyengavana polled 556, beating sitting MP, Simon Hove who got a paltry 213.

In Budiriro, Science and Technology minister, Heneri Dzinotyiwei was a distant third with 150 votes behind eventual winner, Costa Machingauta (278) and one Mafioso who got 170 votes.
